A new report published in the British Medical Journal finds that men who took Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs, such as sildenafil (Viagra), were more likely to develop heart disease in a year. The results, published in theJournal of the American Heart Associationin the same month, were based on data from more than 50,000 participants in the UK. It was found that a majority of those men who took Viagra developed symptoms of heart problems, although they were more likely to develop those side effects than those who did not take the drug.
“We now know that sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in Viagra, was responsible for the high incidence of cardiovascular death among men who took Viagra in this trial,” the authors concluded.
The study has also been supported by the British Heart Foundation, as well as the NHS, and a private charity.
“We are pleased to see that the findings support the findings from our earlier research that found that men who took sildenafil (Viagra) were more likely to develop coronary artery disease than men who did not take Viagra. This finding is significant, as it suggests that sildenafil can be used as a preventative measure against the risk of cardiovascular events,” the authors said in the report. “As such, sildenafil is an effective drug for men who are unable to take Viagra or who have cardiovascular disease or those with pre-existing conditions.”
